Set up in 2001, the .NAME domain name extension is the single TLD planned for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to obtain john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Existing third-level names remained functional.
